So much talent! You could listen to just his guitar playing sans band and feel satisfied. His playing was a whole band in itself…and a ggggrrreat fkn band it was!!!

Most people don't know this but this track was recorded on his ibanez destroyer which was a karina gibson explorer copy, not his frankenstrat.

My mom would play only AM radio growing up, so we regularly heard The Kinks version. If i had heard the Van Halen version first I would've been a hooked Van Halen fan.
EVH was really something else on the electric guitar.
The phrasing in this solo is just unreal. No one can replicate it to this day, incredible.

I remember reading ed had shown a band this song when they were working on it, and when they found out they had to rush to get it out lol.
In an article after this release Ray & Dave Davies like this version but hated it because it sounded really good !! Eddie's playing was really in your face stuff at the time not just for shredding (ie. eruption) , but his tone. The Kinks song (original) is still a very good song and still sounds great. It's just that the equipment in 1964 vs 1978 was night-n-day diff. To try and get an edgier sound D.Davies slashed the cone in his amp to get an edgier sound (we call it distortion today) this is why he liked-n-hated the VH cover. Eddies tone was his vision in a since one could say.
