Holy jeez, you really nail this! Thank you. I've been working on this one, but it's confusing to distinguish what the bass is playing versus the (subtle) guitar line overdubs. Bravo!

great sound!!! just amazingly done… I too cover this and listening to you play helps me as well immensely. The Epy sounds faithfully clear as near a Rick as well… thanks you for sharing!

I tabbed this out the other day. It is totally faithful to neither the studio nor to this video (which I have to say was ENORMOUSLY helpful in figuring out a lot of these parts), but it includes a lot of elements from both, and also includes a few things that I do a little differently when I perform this song live with my R.E.M. Tribute band. Our band is Dead Letter Office — International Tribute to R.E.M. Please check us out on YouTube and "like" us on Facebook. Cheers!

Great job! We play this nearly every show in the R.E.M. tribute band I'm in and while Mike's live play always left a bit of the song open to interpretation (I doubt he ever played it quite the same for 2 consecutive shows), I am particularly weak in the sort of "post chorus" ("but we're still a way's away") portion. I'm hoping this video will help. Thank you very much!

Thank you lumberjack. I played this about 4 times, twice in a very rapid succession.
I think I might be in the band…

I long ago had the opportunity to sit with Mike Mills over a few drinks on evening/morning. I would imagine the conversation was wide ranging and in the end I was pretty much a jerk, telling him I didn't like REM. Obviously, he'd heard such before and was not at all phased. He's rich and famous and I'm not.

Fast-fwd to today and I still don't like REM very much.

That said, I have been playing in bands that have REM songs in their set, and I have a bunch of respect for Mike Mills' playing that I didn't before. That dude (and you Kyle…) are mother-hubbards on the bass(!).

This is awesome. Been listening to a fair bit of older R.E.M over the last year and have just recently re-discovered my love of bass. Possibly my favourite R.E.M song but I didn't realise just how good the bass line was until I watched this video. Great job.

  8. Private Cocky says:

I never realised just how FUCKING BRILLIANT this bassline is because it's hard to hear clearly in the original. Mills is a bass genius. Very well played and I like how (especially on the intro) you didn't just go with the guitar.

I have an impromptu gig coming up where we are called "ReRem", and playing about 9 REM covers. I have not played this tune since my frat band days in the 80's. Thanks for the refresher.

Thanks Kyle! Your right. It's nice to hear the actual bassline go down while the guitar is coming up on the intro lick. Mike is really separated in this track and you did a killer job keeping it together with the open strings. Epi sounds great.
