How to TEMPO MAP in Logic Pro X 10.4 – SMART TEMPO
In this video we look at how you can force the DAW to follow your drifting tempo in your midi / audio performance. This is a great DAW feature if you are working with a sloppy drummer. It’s also great if you just want to have the tempo map perfectly to your intro accelerando, or your outro deaccelerando.

Smart tempo was introduced in Logic Pro X 10.4 and is really a helpful audio tool. Simple to use and yields very good results. Hope you enjoy the video!

Hi Mattias I’ve mapped the tempo of my session to an acoustic guitar track. Then I added MIDI drums and bass. I flattened out the tempo changes slightly so they’re not as extreme. I then rerecorded the acoustic guitar. Now I’m trying to do acoustic double of this track, but I can’t get the second acoustic guitar to line up with the other guitar track or the MIDI parts in a way that is clean and precise enough. Would you have any recommendations? Thank you

Is there a possibility to use the smart tempo if I import a soundfile that fluctuate in tempo, and not as you did record it in logic?
Say I got a bass and guitar background that was not recorded to a metronome and therefore drift between 100-120 bpm (Really bad stringplayer 🙂 ) and I want to get the metronome follow their playing so I can use that to either set to one tempo or like you showed have the auto drummer follow.

Mattias: Great videos. I have a problem using smart tempo sometimes. I often put down a guitar track using Adapt Tempo, the track gets analyzed at about 150 bpm . . but when I add a drummer, it cuts it in half to only 75 bpm. Obviously, the drum track seems too slow or puny at that tempo. How do I get the drummer to play at the guitar tempo of 150 or so? I don't want to change the tempo of the guitar . . just have the drummer play at double the tempo it keeps giving me. Thanks for your help.

This was good. I really needed the second example. Kinda hard to keep up with. The presentation was a little fast. But it gave me an idea. Thanks. I’ll have to watch another video tho. Cuz this one was a little fast

Hi Mattias, great video. I went ahead and started recording a song with a set tempo (101 bpm), now i usually don't like playing to a metronome, but i did for this tune. OK.
So now I have a section of the song where I don't want the tempo to be 101 anymore. I can count it out, but I really can't figure out a way to get logic to follow my tempo and then start on beat 1 (and then continue on in 101 bpm).

    Do you have any tips/solutions?

I've been trying to figure out if I can record guitar parts with my drums playing and have Smart Tempo tighten some simple parts when needed? But some videos say Logic won't work if there is ANY time based things playing… even click. Why would Apple handicap a great feature like this if true? I'm sure it's just a bit of programming to make it work that way too.

  7. David Liddell says:

This almost answers my question. How would you even out on inconsistent tempo? Let's say you wanted your keyboard region to not speed up and slow down but stay at a specific constant tempo. I'm asking because I have a vocal track where the artist back phrases and throws off the tempo of the rest of the piece.

  8. Matt Klock says:

Can we do this with incoming midi ? And possibly send the tempo right back out in real time ? I have analog LFO sent to clock in on Beatstep Pro. Which converts it to midi. I want to record the tempo in real time and sync internal and external tempo clock.

So if I slow down the analog clock, beatstep pro slows down, I want logic to respond and to change internal and external effects, while recording…. Any idea how? Thanks

Hello! 1 question please! 🙂 I am in the process of "fixing" all the beats on my older disco/rock/live tracks that don't keep a steady beat (have drifting tempo), so that they're all easily "mixable" with each other – and with newer tracks that have steady beats (as they are made with software, and not a live recording where the drummer keeps an approximate tempo). So far it's going great using smart tempo (although some tracks are quite time-consuming as Logic hasn't identified the correct downbeats' start and the beat markers that it has placed need manual dragging).
Now, I have noticed something that I think must be a bug in Logic, and it's really annoying as I have to start a track's fixing over and over everytime this happens. UUURRRGHH. Please let me know if there's some kind of setting that I have to select so that this stops happening as it would really save me a lot of time.
When I've finished checking (and manually correcting, if needed) that all the beat markers have been placed in the correct places, in the Smart Tempo editor window, I then bounce the track (CMD+B) in order to export an mp3. I then import the new/"fixed" track into my Serato DJ (DJing software) to analyze it and then set my beatgrid markers there. I then play it back in Serato to confirm that all the beatgrid lines are indeed on-the-beat. 8 of 10 tracks have been perfectly fixed! 🙂 But, in the odd occasion that a beat or 2 are off the beatgrid lines, I just go back to the track in Logic to fix that/those specific area/s. (I have NOT closed the Logic project in the meanwhile – until I have verified that all the beats are perfectly aligned to the beatgrid in Serato). BUT, the problem is that when I double-click the audio file in Logic (to enter the Editor -> Smart Tempo tab again, to fix those areas), Logic WILL NOT just open the Editor window that was open a couplee of minutes ago, so that I can just pick up from where I left it and just continue my editing!!! Instead it gives me this "horrendous" message that says "This file contains the tempo at which it was ORIGINALLY recorded. Click "edit" only if you wish the file to receive a Smart Tempo analysis, REPLACING THE ORIGINAL TEMPO"!!!! And there's no other option other than to click on the "Edit" button in order to (re-)enter the Smart Tempo editor!!! WTF is its problem?? Is this a bug??
Needless to say that if I click on Edit to re-enter the Smart Tempo editor window and correct 1-2 areas ONLY, EVERYTHING I had been doing up to that point is LOST. the beat markers are in the ORIGINAL positions that they were BEFORE I had fixed their positions!! This means that I have to start ALL OVER AGAIN!!
This is REALLY frustrating!! Please tell me that there's some option to click so that this stops happening!

Thank you for your time & help!! 🙂 🙂

Thank you so much for showing this feature, Mattias! I've never heard before, but it looks quite useful — after watching this video I needed to put down orchestral part from the audio, and this smart tempo facility was the first thing I thought 🙂 Does it have a possibility to extract something like tempo envelope or automation curve from the existing audio clip or it is more for a live playing, like you've shown? I think, it could be very handy to use it for every genre with floating tempo, varying rhythm, as it's quite a big amount of work to guess every single tempo change manually.

Oh, I'm a little bit under the heap of different tasks again now, it's spring holidays time here in Russia (late in February some kind of man's day and now it's women's day), flat construction and all this. But little return to the music a little bit now. It's always so pity to pass the spring without music, I think, this is the season absolutely devoted to music, art and all the inspiring things. So I must return to it, definitely 🙂
