Originally i would have been happy with a baritone 6 string in 30,31.5 inch scale length, for less strings, but they are not popular which means high custom pricing, so i just went with ibanez m80m, at the time it was £919 British pounds, now it's 1400,so it worked out a good deal

As a 6 string bass player who loves stepping on Guitar players toes (tonally)…I'm offended…!!! LMAO (It's a joke, Interwebs…). I do wonder if this would force a bass player to play differently or even go full Pete Hook for a song to sonically work. Have to check the new Deftones to see how Vega handles it…

  3. Toby Taylor says:

I jumped from a 6 string to an 8 years ago and never regretted it. The only downside is feeling like a standard 6 string is the size of a ukelele when you switch back.

  4. John Hooten says:

I am exclusively a 6 stringer after several failed attempts to keep a 7 in my lineup. I could play it no problem, It just wasn't inspiring to me. With that said, and my experience in low tuning on my 6, I'd insist on fan fret if ever considering an 8 string. The thickness I have to go on the 'e' string for it to feel right tuning a 6 string to drop b or even b standard, I really can't see enjoying the thickness of a standard straight scale length 8 string.

Can anyone point out awesome legitimate music with 9 strings?

For me personally, I've always loved bass sounds, and have always been attracted to low "heavy" tunings. Initially made 'drop C' my home. I got a 7 string and soon got comfortable to compose music on it (with the drop A of course). I started looking for 8 strings just before they exploded onto the scene (the only video I could find was an old man playing sweet jazz on an 8). My mentality was that the 8th string was the final step in guitar. I have 2, but I still haven't found my 'zen', the drop E is still too muddy in my hands.
When 9's came out, I felt it was overkill. Like its just a gimmick, too flashy and unnecessary. Like its just gonna continue to 10 and on, but there's no foundational need for the C#. I still don't get the point of a 9, but I'm not so strongly against it anymore. I'd use a 9 to expand higher on 8 string tuning (high G/A)
