Hey friends! In this lesson I’m excited to teach you how to play “If I Had a Boat” by Lyle Lovett. This one came in by patron request, and it has been my pleasure to learn this song and prepare this lesson. I’ll teach you a capo 9 version of this song (how Lovett plays it), focusing on a Travis fingerpicking style matching what he plays. I’ll show you the chord shapes, progressions needed, explain the Travis picking basics, and break down the verse/chorus/intro sections with tabs. I hope you enjoy! Another good Lyle Lovett song is "God Will".
I would like to learn “Step inside this House”
Overall an excellent lesson. But, there's no need to plant your pinky on the b string. Lyle doesn't. He uses the third finger and that works better for me. Also, take a look at the video for the song. At 2:08 you can see that Lyle plays a full D/F# chord with the F# bass and the F# on top. So you're very close, but I find that watching the original artist play can help get it just right.
This. This is how you make a frikkin tutorial. (Open with a playthrough, structure it well, add timestamps and cut the waffle)

David, thank you so much!!!! Lyle has been my boy for decades, I absolutely love his stuff but I've never attempted his music. This vid is so straight forward, all it takes is a little bit of courage, confidence and a WTF attitude and following your instructions are so simple.

Great lesson – thank you! I recently subscribed to your channel – your teaching style is clear and approachable. One question… Instead of using just the index finger to play the melody notes, what about assigning the G B and high E string to fingers 1, 2 and 3 so that the middle finger is playing the B and the ring finger is playing the high E?
