Thanks! About 1/2 way through the lesson. I already know a few of these cause a teacher was showing me “Lover Man” 20+ years ago. I forgot the names of some of them.

Is it okay to use your thumb? I’ve always used my thumb curling around to hit a fret on the E string (the low E at the top). Is that common? Do people play like that? Because it feels natural for me.

Hello .. I have a question or rather a request for possible help. When I write notes in TAB via MIDI (I have a Godin guitar with a 13-pin input, I connect it to the Roland GR 55 and then connect it to the computer with a midi-usb cable) using a guitar, the program records the sound "c" on the 2nd string, threshold 1. I would like so that he would write the note in a different position on the fingerboard, eg string 4, fret 10. But it does not happen. So it's not good, because the piece is recorded in the wrong position on the fingerboard. Do you know something about it? Maybe there are some solutions .. Using the guitar, I write notes in TAB much faster and more conveniently. I have been looking for a solution for several months. I am asking for a possible answer. I would be very grateful for any hint. Best wishes. MiroslaV

Nice job Justin! I’ve been playing for decades, but just now getting into jazz. Studying about three different jazz method books. Your video lesson was helpful! Cheers!

After looking at a number of videos , I came upon this one. Trying to learn jazz chords through trying to play a song " Autumn Leaves" wasn't working. I could work out the finger positions, but didn't understand why.
A little back ground, I played in a band in High school, in the 60's, keyboards, and played around a little with the guitar player guitar, and have pretty much always had a guitar, but didn't truly understand the neck. This opened my eyes a lot.
I can do the usual stuff, open and bar chords, and I can hear tunes and work out a lot, but jazz is what I like, and would like to learn. I recently acquired a nice "jazz box" , so now I'm committed . Thank you . jeff

This is one thing I've never gotten. I started playing guitar about 20 years ago. NEVER seriously, so very on and off. I've noticed that people who play young(or maybe it's just been the people I've exposed to) are able to cleanly bar the DGB strings with a single knuckle. For example, able to play an open A major with just their forefinger. My knuckle does not at all bend that way, never has. Serious question, is this something that people are just able to gain the flexibility through practice or are some people just naturally born better at it? I still have to play A open with 3 fingers.

Didn’t teach anything. Just should’ve showed the shapes and said that if you go up and down it changes based on the top string. Garbage tutorial, you don’t even properly say strings and frets your fingers are going on and it’s very hard to see bad video sir

Justin. I just did Fly me to the moon chord melody style. I tried it in Gmin in stead of A min..as my classical guitar has a shorter neck.
Anyways.I started in G min7 in 7th position. And played it in a different voicing than usual but it sounds good. I will shortly be getting some of your paid material. Had to buy another car..was tired of working on it.
I guess I could sell my guitar.
Naaaash .No way .had it for years.

  10. PIANOSTYLE100 says:

Justin. I have never played that G dim7 as 5:48. This is going to come in handy on songs like Fly me to the moon. Great for comping or chord melody. Some things that help me is knowing how one string relates to another. The guitar 4ths G C F Bb. Allows me to quickly see the minor third Bb. If see a minor thirdb5 or a 6 I have probably have a a min or dimin. chord. That is unbelievably helpful in half dim 7 chords.

For Beginners. I know you don't have time to cover all this. First a G7 I'd a shortcut way to say dominant G chord. The G7 will always have a flat 7 or b7 in it.
This can be confusing as this is sometime called minoring the seven. This is from music school.
This extremely confusing. Minor usually means the quality of the third of the chord..I will use the C7 as example. C E G Bb. This is a C7.
The (flat 7) b7 is always a a whole tone down from the root. By just a little trick we can instantly know the b7, which is always..no exceptions..in every dominant chord. Eg. C7 C9 C13. It is implied.
They all have a flat 7. Ok here is a fail proof way of instant knowing the flat 7. See if you can see the pattern. First I'll name the Chord root, then the b7. I'll start with C.
    C Bb G F A G Db Cb B A
Gb Fb.. See how easy it is. Now to put this unbelievably valuable info into play. Reference above.
    C7 or C Dom 7 (C E G Bb) A7 is
(A C# E G) ..one more.. Btw learn all your dominant chords Let's do Ab..I did not cover Ab(Ab C EbGb
Notice the all have the major 3 Rd. A dominant chord will never never
never have a min third in it. There is one exception. The chord can have a #9 in the extensions. The # 9 is not the third of the chord. A The C7#9 could be ( C E G Bb D#)
most likely jazz musicians will omit the five It could be played
    ( C E Bb D#) or ( 1 3 b7 # 9)..
Notice this has the ..major third in this case E Music schools have tendency to call the b7 a minor 7.
Let me explain why. Minor in this case is lowering and it can be also called flatting. Think of a flat tire. The car is lowered. The real confusion to new musicians. is that minor has been taught in many books to refer to the b3 of the Root scale. In C this would be a Eb. So So let's carry this out..just a wee bit more. ( C Eb G BB) is ?
Well it has the root C. It has Eb..so -3 or minor 3..the 5, G is not really necessary. The b7 (min7?) Is Bb.
So you would think that this is a minor 7 chord. You would be right.
But the b7 (Bb) is not what makes
this chord minor. Minor and and major really refers to quality. I was meaning to write a small comment.. but this can't be covered without writing a. chapter in book. This all texting ..hope no mistakes. Now I'll go back to this excellent video.
