There is a strong connection between the timelessly brilliant work of Dave Rawlings/Gillian Welch and Neil Young. This track, “Cumberland Gap,” from the Poor David’s Almanack album really showcases that bond. The plodding tempo, modal chord movements, and layered harmonies could certainly be at home on any of the classic CSNY or Crazy Horse records.
There’s no electric guitar on the album version, but I’m really having a love affair with my new Guild Starfire III, so I arranged it into a grungy, DADGAD tuning kinda thing.

On one of Rawlings earlier albums, I forget the name, he actually does a 15 minute cut. After about 7 minute he goes right into "Cortez the Killer". One of Young and Crazy Horse's best electric cuts IMO.

    Hi Eric,
I really liked the sound of this version. Have you ever played this in double drop D? I'm an old Neil fan and about 98% of his electric stuff is in that tuning or does adding the 1/3rd back in there screw it up? The DADGAD tuning is interesting, but plays hell with my fretboard memorization. Lol! Thanks, Doug

Nice playing, Eric! Love that Starfire iii, too. Unfortunately there just aren't enough vids that showcase this baby properly, so I appreciate your using the "right" tool, skillfully at that, in this vid. Cheers.

Hi Eric. I don't want you to think I'm obsessed with you or your ebony-smooth licks. That's just silly… But I think I found you in a video playing live with Modern English in Portland? Ring any bells? If that's not you, then you have a guitar twin, my friend. Literally, you might need to check in with your mom. https://youtu.be/nx1293rmQNI

Great lesson brother! Neil AND Dave together, many thanks! Can't get enough of your stuff. Loving the EP as well!! Cheers man 🗣📢🎵🙇‍♂️ Loves me some DADGAD! Especially for Celtic RT type stuff on the acoustic. Never would have though of it for an application like this! Mind blown!!

Just curious. Everything here sounds great, but I was wondering—- how loud is that in the room for you? Reasonably loud, very loud, or beyond, like a live set loud? And also— do you tend to use pedals well over unity gain?
