=====================

Halloween is a party originated from two traditions: a pagan, of Celtic origin, over three thousand years old, and another Catholic, of medieval origin. The surprising thing is to note the preservation of pagan customs in a traditional Christian society and after so many centuries of relentless persecution of witches by the Inquisition.

The Celts

The bonfires held at Samhain, Eva – the New Year’s Celtic, were made to warm up friendly spirits and ward off evil ones, and also represent the return of the sun, bringing warmth and growth. Like bonfires of the Celts it continued to burn through the centuries.

Although they did not develop writing, the Celts left a strong cultural heritage present in music, in tales (the magician Merlin and the sword Excalibur of King Arthur) and legends (fairies, gnomes and goblins are figures of Celtic origin), popular celebrations among them the June party and Halloween.

Christians and pagan customs

When Christianity, in the fourth century, became an official religion and later the only one of the Roman Empire, the Church began to repress with increasing force everything that related to pagan beliefs and customs. The stereotype of the sorceress or witch was consolidated: the night flight mounted on a stick (the broom is later), the evil potions, the “hoodoo” animals (black cat and crow) and those of nighttime habits (owl and bat).

Halloween today

Many of the Celtic customs survived and were mixed with Christianity, which in turn also incorporated pagan customs. Thus, for example, the offering of alms and the cake of souls, traditional in those days, are the Christian version of offerings to the dead. Visiting cemeteries to pray and placing flowers and candles on the graves of your loved ones also has its origin in the cult of the dead celebrated by Samhain (it is the root of Halloween).

Lyrics
I am my mother’s savage daughter
The one who runs barefoot cursing sharp stones
I am my mother’s savage daughter
I will not cut my hair, I will not lower my voice

My mother’s child is a savage
She looks for her omens in the colors of stones
In the faces of cats, in the fall of feathers
In the dancing of fire and the curve of old bones

My mother’s child dances in darkness
And sings heathen songs by the light of the Moon
And watches the stars and renames the planets
And dreams she can reach them with a song and a broom

My mother’s child curses too loud and too often
My mother’s child laughs too hard and too long
And howls at the Moon and sleeps in ditches
And clumsily raises her voice in this song

Now we all are brought forth out of darkness and water
Brought into this world through blood and through pain
And deep in our bones, the old songs are wakening
So sing them with voices of thunder and rain

We are our mother’s savage daughters
The ones who run barefoot cursing sharp stones
We are our mother’s savage daughters
We will not cut our hair, We will not lower our voice

As someone of Irish and Nordic descent, I'm a bit offended that you would ignore that Berginsdottir is NOT an Irish name. But a Nordic one. You need to change your title to reflect proper credit.
