What is going on my mates!
Today we are going to talk about an alternative rock band from New York called Brand New | This video is called Brand New – The Rise And Fall because we will be taking a look at the story of how Jesse Lacey and the band became extremely controversial and even hated by some after the event in late 2017.
Brand New and Jesse Lacey have been a band for a long time.. They have a lot of genres that they could possibly be put into such as: pop punk, emo, alternative rock, indie rock, and many more that I’m sure you could place them into.
They’ve released outstanding albums like Your Favorite Weapon, Deja Entendu, The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me, Daisy, and Science Fiction.
Your Favorite Weapon was pretty emo and pop punk, Deja Entendu was pretty emo, pop punk, and indie rock. The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me was very emo and indie rock, Daisy was a lot of things, but pretty experimental overall compared to their previous material. Science Fiction is honestly so hard to describe, but it’s for sure dark and beautiful at the same time.
Brand New and Jesse Lacey played their final shows as a band in late 2017 before all of the controversy arose and as of now, they’ll never return, play another show, and we’ll more than likely never hear from them again.
Brand New was an extremely influential band, inspiring many with their songs like: Soco Amaretto Lime, The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows, Jesus Christ, and many more.
Very sad that it had to end the way it did, but life goes on, you know?

So my thoughts on the whole deal with Lacey and what he was doing is yes I feel badly for the victims and the main victim who spoke out about it because yes she was totally underage when they first started talking and that’s just wrong and disgusting for a man too prey on someone younger like that. The article I read basically was a interview with the main victim who accused Lacey of these things but what I don’t understand about the situation is that if Lacey asking her for nude pics all the time made her feel abused and made her start a drinking habit that forced her into rehab for awhile then why did she continue to have a speaking relationship with Lacey? Why didn’t she just end things the moment she felt uncomfortable and how it was wrong of him to do this right from the start? Especially, since she claims that most of their interactions where on AOL messager and via text. It’s so easy to just no reply to text/messages. Yet she continued too talk to him, shoot photos for his band at live shows, go to shows to meet up with him and eventually when she was of age she admitted to having consensual sex with him and then back tracked saying that she felt she has no other choice but to have consensual sex with him. I feel like you do have a choice and that is you don’t physically meet up with the person. It would be a different situation if Lacey had physically raped her but she admitted too having an on going consensual relationship with Lacey for 5 plus years. Like I said before soliciting pictures from a minor is wrong and disgusting Lacey is totally a piece of shit for doing that but this whole thing of how it emotionally messed her up for years and is why she started abusing drugs and alcohol is just hard for me to understand because you make your own choices as a person. Nobody makes you an alcoholic and nobody forces you to continue to go out of your way to stay in contact with someone for 5 plus years. I for one still think brand new has created some of the best music of our generational time and still listen to them. A lot of ppl everyday make the same mistakes as Lacey did and yet those same ppl will be quick to jump on the “cancel culture train” to point the finger at Lacey just because of his social status of being a known musician. Ppl who are doing even way more messed up things than Lacey will be quick to blame and that’s only cause they haven’t been called out yet on their wrong doings. I know ppl will probably disagree with me completely on how I feel the victim herself is in the wrong as well for continued consensual interactions with Lacey and then later on having sex with him but to each their own I guess. Lacey did a really shitty thing by praying on minors for nude pictures.
As somebody from Long Island and a fan of brand new, you should probably mention the fact that Jesse was the original bassist of taking back Sunday
It’s so sad to see. I’ve never come across a band with a fan base where you would so frequently hear things like “they helped me through so many dark times” or “this band saved my life.” I remember my first suicide attempt I had them playing on repeat because I wanted them to be the last band I ever heard in my life. Their music changed me forever.
"Daisy" was pure masterpiece, so experimental…… but "The God and Devil are raging inside me" is their best record, the songwriting is just over the fucking roof

And then I heard about Jesse. I couldn't listen to their CDs anymore because of his vocals. I ended up throwing all the albums and the hoodie out.
So no, in this case, I obviously couldn't separate the art from the artist. I wish I could have.
Personally, I still listen to them. I hate what he did and 100% agree it was wrong, but their music is so amazing to me and I think that it shouldn't affect the meanings behind the songs.

Brand new was, is and always will be amazing no matter what bullshit happens in their personal lives. I was lucky enough to see them a few times including right before this all came out.

We don't know exactly what went down with Jesse. In those days so many dudes in bands 19 years old were getting with 16 year old chicks. Just like the Seniors in H.S sleeping with Freshman. Parents knew about it and didn't give a shit because Brad the 18 year old on the Football team popular. It seemed that girl wanted to date Jesse and was bitter that he wasnt about it because obviously he can get whatever chick he wanted and got married. Who knows man …and im liberal but everyone is quick to reach for pitchforks on allegations these days. I was accused by an ex of abuse but she was the instigator trying to control me and got physical w me until i told her to fuck off and left. I had witnesses too yet tried to play the victim once it was over. But of course most would instantly see her as the victim simply because im a male. So i feel allegations alone should not be used to destroy someones reputation because they can be innocent. In the Ian Watkins situation the proof is overwhelming and fucking disgusting… A baby?….That was a hard pill to swallow. Its still upsetting thats how Brand news legacy ended after such a great last album. Hopefully some truth comes out for closure.

This band helped me through out so much stuff, helped me in tough days and times, lows and high of my life, being lonely and depressed… I cannot say anything else but thank you, Brand New… Allegations are there of course, but the burden and things these band did for me are outrageous.. I will forever enjoy listening to their records and songs, no matter what.

Jesse Lacey's lyrics were super dark. Like, DARK. When the news broke, I reflected on the lyrics, and was kinda like, of course. It's like when news broke that Louis C.K. was leveraging his power as well, I was thinking this is pretty much what he's been talking about all along. Why are we surprised. We love them because they're dark, and we loathe them for it as well.
My first ever show was: mxpx, vendetta red, brand new, and dashboard confessional. Salem Armory in Salem, Oregon. Shit changed my life.
