LaDonna Adrian Gaines born December 31, 1948, married Helmut Sommer and gained her very famous stage name by anglicizing it as Donna Summer. The name evokes good times and great music and her first really big hit was with a song that set the standard for porno disco, “Love To Love You Baby”.
It was released on December 6, 1975 and was the highest new entry that week at #55 when Silver Convention’s “Fly Robin Fly” was on its second week at #1 and two future #1’s were below Donna’s song, Rhythm Heritage “Theme From SWAT” at #84 and the CB themed tune “Convoy” from CW McColl at #82.
Her rise to the top of the Ho100 was thwarted by Paul Simon’s “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” and it spent two weeks at #2 in February of 1976. Time was that radio would play hits way after their peak and Donna joined Diana Ross for the battle of song of the summer 1976 with “Love Hangover” which was the logical conclusion to the radio love fest. She did top the disco chart on October 4, 1975 spending four weeks and announcing the new queen of disco, replacing Gloria Gaynor who had spent four weeks at #1 with her blazing disco hit “Never Can Say Goodbye”.
Unfortunately for Donna the song never made the Billboard year end chart as it was released in late 1975 and peaked in 1976 which divided the plays between the two years.
Much has been documented about this influential pop song. Donna brought the concept of a song to Giorgio that she had written called “Love To Love You Baby” and they recorded a demo where she ad libbed a vocal pattern, “just goofing around and creating an atmosphere and figured that we’d get together to write the rest of the song later”.
Giorgio, who had the idea of recording the song with another vocalist than Donna, handed the demo over to Neil Bogart. Bogart was adamant that Summer do the vocals on the record and that they needed to extend the song which left Giorgio and Donna scratching their heads as they did not understand the need to make it longer.
Bogart had taken the single version of the song and played it at one of his blowout parties where an errant guest knocked the table the record player was on and the needle jumped back to the start of the record, in effect creating an eight minute remix song from the four minutes it actually was. The crowd was ecstatic and out of this happy accident the extended play single was born. Then Moroder took Neil’s advice and looped the track to nearly 17 minutes of disco bliss.
Donna used her acting skills to record her vocal, setting the scene by clearing the recording studio, darkening the room and actually lying on the floor doing her best Marilyn Monroe impression.
The song did not break on radio until Florida DJ’s hopped on the single leading Bogart to convince Giorgio and Donna to come to America, which they were resistant to as Donna had just suffered a severe heart infection. She finally agreed and in November flew to the US to begin a six week promotional tour. Bogart set the scene by having influential DJ Frankie Crocker at WLBS New York who played the song in its entirety during his after midnight radio show. It lit a fire under the single and it took over the clubs and radio.
The buzz Bogart created around the release included a cake made for her homecoming Boston concert. It wasn’t just a cake though, it was huge! It was Donna’s likeness of her body done in frosting that was four feet long. He used LA’s Hansen’s Bakery who was the only baker that would do the impressive feat and shipped the cake via ambulance to LAX and it took up two first class seats with the third seat taken up by Bogart who had alerted the photographers in both cities who jumped on the opportunity to document the cake and promote the single.
That led to high profile appearances on Soul Train and American Bandstand which in turn helped the song explode into the American consciousness and lovers who love to love their baby it they did, and still do.
I have extended this song to 49 minutes which is at least how long people should be taking to love to love….try it sometime. The structure here has been changed slightly to accommodate more passages that ebb and flow the songs energy, can you keep it up for that long? Now I have this song that has earwormed into my little kitty brain.
