The opening track from Elton John’s 1971 album “Madman Across the Water.” Also released as a single in America 1972, but failed to reach the top 40.

The lyrics express images of California, because Bernie Taupin wrote the words to Maxine Feibelman, whom he’d met there on their first American Tour. They were introduced by Ray Williams, Elton’s manager at the time, just before opening night at the Troubadour in L.A. Ray Williams can not only be credited for bringing Elton and Bernie together, but also Bernie and Maxine. Maxine began joining the tours, and was often mending clothes of those on the tour. Many of Elton’s early outfits were actually made up of items borrowed from Maxine. Bernie and Maxine were married in 1971 in Lincolnshire, England, with Elton standing as best man. Their honeymoon was the Elton John Tour to Hawaii.

In 2000 the song was used in the story of the film “Almost Famous,” with the actors singing along with Elton’s original recording on the bus radio.

The pedal steel guitar was played by B.J. Cole, who was then playing in a band with Stu Brown, Elton’s old colleague from Bluesology.
