For nearly 6 months – 95% of my daily music has been Van Halen ( DLR) era i haven't listened to "albums" all the way through in years. Who does really. Especially considering the dismal swamp of current music who's #1 you ask? Why that would be "Cardi B" an auto-tuned rapper- former stripper who's hit "WOP" opened the Grammys – I didn't watch – but I heard the roaring backlash regarding the programs pause to reflect on beloved musical artists lost in 2020- EVH got a whopping ( or should I say "WOPPING") 15 second flash of an image of a fake frankenstrat – thats it folks. Fucking unreal. A genius, prodigal musician, innovator, ground breaking ,influencial – a career that spanned nearly 5 decades. Member of thee most BADASS, globally successful band in history. Throw in the fact he was a humble and self-effacing, no ego- as cool a dude ever and an under the radar philanthropist, naturally altruistic – creating a foundation to distribute instruments to kids that otherwise wouldn't have. I could go on and on. As far as I'm concerned – Grammys, RR Hall of fame can both kick rocks.
Centuries ago -a lucky population had the luck and privilege to be alive and witness Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Christian Bach, the rock stars of our ancestors. I know I'm not alone in feeling gratitude, that I just happened to be around when Edward Van Halen changed the world.
My favorite record or song changes from day to day. In my VH sabbatical, I've made discoveries. Like – OMG, "Diver Down" is staggeringly fantastic. Jubilant, celebratory- maybe the constant references to most of the record being covers made it not quite up to the VH standards. Pfffft? I'll quote Diamond Dave – when asked about doing many covers – he shot back "it's not a cover once it's been Van Halenized" I 100% agree. Besides, their previous record – Fair Warning- was about as pitch black and dark all the way through. But not like whiny depressing grunge silliness. FW is balls out ferocious. And those riffs.
Im pretty firm about Van Halen's debut being my ultimate favorite. But that's mostly because the record is a time capsule of my youth. Sentimental. Plus – my friends and I were losing our shit over that record. Aliens, cool aliens had landed. Most of us were 14-16 and had older siblings like I had – listening to STYX, god damn Blue Oyster Cult, who had that one song. Oh god, my 5 years older sister also liked Billy Joel for fucks sake. Now, "we" had our own thing.
Van Halen 2 – perfectly picks up where the first record ended. Pretentious know it all's who bust on bands for being derivative, and it's usually some Rolling Stone 'critic'- DONT GET IT. The kids who go gonzo over a bands first record – don't want some experimental shit….yet, more of the same please. Besides, most of VH2 were written alongside the debut or on the road. I love the urgency of that- and BTW, VH2 was recorded in 9 days. Talk from the inner circle say a few tracks were one -take , so no alternate versions exist. Quite rare. I think DOA might just be my fave on that one. Dave can do know wrong in my book. When he's wailing away – he's telling a story. His voice is so electric.
Hey. Can you tell I've been swimming in the Van Halen pool. Haha. And I watch this magical 10 minute EVH solo pretty much every day. Or if I'm in a shitty mood. He transports the listener. For those minutes, everything else falls away.
I'll be back- I wanna spring a cool surprise on my fellow VH peeps. Id let the cat out of the bag now – but I'm sleepy. Lol. I'll give a hint – B O A. ( Not DOA – B-O-A) till than –
    ☮️ Peace -lisa

Man we've lost too many guitar gods. We've lost Hendrix, Rhodes, Clark, Darrell, Richrath, and now Van Halen… I can hear a guitar symphony going on in heaven 🙂

  3. Frank G says:

Imagine if Michael Jordan was to basketball and Tom Brady to football what Eddie Van Halen was to the guitar…think of how great the first two could have been if they were as good as EVH.

  4. Rob Brown says:

If anyone hasnt seen his interview about how he became a guitar God and what he had to do to create possibly the most famous guitar in rock n roll history. Watch it. "Eddie Van Halen what it means to be American."
