Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question…

Q: I was asked to start playing guitar in my cousins Top-40 band. They do a lot of 80’s Melodic Pop-Guitar stuff, by bands like the; Pretenders. I am not super familiar with this guitar style, so could you consider making a video lesson covering it. Mainly the way they create all of the guitar parts. Most of it seems like a blend of; Soul, R&B and Rock. I’m just unsure of the guitar’s overall role. Thanks!
Zach – Minneapolis, MN. USA

A: 80’s Melodic Pop-Rock Guitar has a distinctive sound that draws from several styles. The primary idea with it is it’s pop-music sensibility. The songs follow the typical pop song layout, and use mostly clean guitar tones. The style also applies a unique approach to how chords are both chosen and arranged. We often find a lot of chordal arpeggios, along with suspended chord types, and smaller two note double-stops performed as layered tracks. This is why you’ll notice that many of these bands had two guitar players in them. One other point worth mentioning, are the use of effects like; Chorus, Reverb, Flanger, and various Delay’s. In this lesson, I’ll be covering a number of ideas you can begin applying right away that should help you when you’re; performing, or composing in this guitar style.

I found this very interesting since this style was pretty unfamiliar despite basic effects and some technigues. I play guitar in a group that mixes hard rocking stuff to new wave and synthpop style. I play the rhythm mostly but I find this very useful. In addition it is funny to realize that there was so much going with guitar in the 80s though synths were the big thing.

HI ANDREW, i am just one frustrated guitar player, but after watching you play i realised that there are good teachers there that can make it happen.you are magic and brilliant. i would like to be your student.

Hey Andrew you've helped me expand my knowledge of guitar theory enormously, but I seem to have trouble applying it. I understand most of guitar theory, such as chords, major/minor scales, but I have trouble using it.  For example lets say my chord progression is A, D, E, mainly in the key of A.

I am having trouble improvising over it, and deciding what scales to use. Do I use The A/D/E major scales, the Pentatonic, or the scales in different octaves? Do you have any videos on this topic, if so please point me in the direction. Thank you for taking the time to read this, can't wait for more videos :).
