Man, yakuza 0 was an absolutely incredible game. If you haven’t checked it out, then by all means do so as soon as possible. It has probably one of the most intense and emotional stories of any RPG I’ve ever played, whilst somehow balancing that perfectly with the absolutely hilariously stupid side stories and mini games. Seriously, play it as soon as you get the chance. You won’t regret it!

As for the song itself, this is one of those ones that’s simultaneously cheesy af, but can also be pretty sad and melancholic when it’s accompanied by a good substory. The harmony is very typical of jazzy VGM, although it does contain a few surprises. The main chord progression features a series of ii, V, I, which is probably the most common progression in jazz (I’m no jazz authority, in fact i suck at jazz, but i think most jazz musicians would agree with that statement.) The first ii, V, I, is an am7, D7 and GM7. The second is an f#m7b5, B7 and Em7. I guess the overall chord progression is a iv, VII7, III, ii, V I, although I’ve never heard of this progression before, so I’m probably wrong lol. This is probably one of my favourite chord progressions and is actually really versatile, as I’ve heard it in a variety of genres, not just jazz. The second repeat of this chord progressions changes slightly and uses a cm7b5 to resolve to a GMaj chord.

The next section is really nice and for some reason reminds me a lot of kakariko village from LoZ: OOT. I’m not gonna dive into the roman numeral notation, but it’s definitely a sweet chord progression, which eventually ends up resolving on an EM7, the opposite of the Em7 that we started out on. I think this is a really nice way to end the song and kind of gives it that warm, melancholic feeling of having progressed from this dark, sad minor tonality, to resolve on a nice, bright major chord.

Either way, I hope you enjoyed the video and my little analysis of the music. Also, check out Mewmore’s amazing lofi remix: It’s absolutely amazing! See ya in the next video!

Ah love this substory recurring theme. Yakuza series have some amazing piano BGM where you would least expect them. Hope to see more of tracks from Yakuza series.

Of all things I found the description here most interesting. I love talking about the breakdown of chord progressions in general but in particular it’s rare to see Yakuza’s great progressions discussed.
Bakamitai makes fantastic use of 7b5 chords as well and the composers are all extremely talented. (In fact it even uses F#m7b5 and C#m7b5 like this song does!)

Thank you so much for the sheet music. It saves me playing by ear and writing the song down but more importantly it means my dad can appreciate it as well. He’s not a gamer by any stretch, but he’s a huge fan of some of the songs I find and he’ll love this. Thank you!
