XEM CHI TIẾT VIDEO NGAY BÊN DƯỚI
One of the oldest and best known traditional tunes out there: “Shady Grove”. A must know tune for any bluegrass jam. I learned how to play this song the correct way after playing it with other pickers. One of my favorite versions of this song is from the “Pizza Tapes” featuring Jerry Garcia, David Grisman and Tony Rice. There’s also a great version of Doc Watson performing the song on his album “The Best of Doc Watson”.

The moment you brought in cross picking I got lost. Why not include in the tab?
Check out "Matty Groves" by the British band, Fairport Convention for an earlier English perspective on the song.
I was with ya till measure 3. You're showing 10 notes in the space for 8 with no indication for a triplet. HELP!
Beginner? Is there a level before that?…..
Excellent video! Brandon you could not have spelled it out any better. I going to find a few guitar enthusiast in my neighborhood and jam to it for two weeks straight. It’s the only way to learn more quickly.
Far too many windings on your string posts. Suggest you watch the Taylor Guitars video on how to restring.
Great video man! This is the first bluegrass tune i ever learned on guitar but it surely won't be the last 🙂
Noice.
Could you please do a tutorial for the Doc Watson version of The House Carpenter?
Much love from Germany.
Brandon – you are the man! I miss jamming with you dude
Fun song. And D-minor IS the saddest of all keys.
Maybe this lesson will help more people understand both the beauty And the difficulty of Bluegrass. These Pickers are Badass…and most of them play 3-6 instruments at excellent levels…..
(App-ahh-latch-in). Sorry. Had to put that in there. Just came across you videos. Great content..
Why don't you show everything slowly. The basic tones appear extremely slow and the rest at full speed. Stupid way of teaching.
ok im gonna get a guitar just to learn this one song and play it with a piece of hay in my mouth
Thank you for the break down. I'm finally learning flat picking bluegrass style after all these years of finger-picking. This is a great song to learn on.
This is great. I’m just a little confused about cross-picking. I’m an obvious beginner
One measure at a time is the way to go for this kind of tune. Thanks a million. Awesome work.
Ii struggle soo hard with the additional notes u unfortunately didn't put into the TABs (especially at the beginning part when playing the Dm and C thing). I slowed it down to the max but then it's still hard to get the right notes and timing.. I would have found it better when u really had shown EVERY SINGLE NOTE in your TABs which makes it actually have this bluegrass character. For me as an "advanced beginner" it's almost not possible to get it. It makes me giving up at this point which is sad bcuz i actually like this one. =/
LOVE the video my dude but i couldnt help but see how manny times those strings are wrapped around the tuning pegs
Wonderful lesson. Thanks for explaining so well.
Your up and down strokes don't coincide with the TAB notation, you play down up when the TAB says down down etc.
Amazing lesson!
Beginner “bluegrass” guitar…..not beginner guitar, just for all those who think this isn’t a beginner song, he means for bluegrass it is. You should already no how to pick and strum at this point!
Beginner.
Fast tune.
Pick one, but only one.
Are you using med gauge strings?
Awesome video dude! I grew up on Doc and always wanted to play this but thought it would be out of my reach! Love the way you broke it down. Just a Qq, what is the chord progression for the rhythm part? I’m looking to sing over it and don’t think I’m quite where I can finger and sing.
TIMESTAMPS FOR MYSELF AND FOR YOU TO EASILY NAVIGATE:
0:00 – Full thing at regular speed
0:59 – Measure 1 (slow)
2:43 – Measure 2 (slow)
4:11 – Measure 1 and 2 together
6:33 – Measure 3 (slow)
9:33 – Measure 4 (slow)
12:04 – Measures 3 and 4 together
14:05 – Measures 1 – 4 (slow)
The basic core of the song is beginner (from the tabs) but the version you play at the beginning is much more than that. That’s what I’d like to get to. I can’t seem to wrap my head around the “throw some improvised cross-picking over the chords here”.
Great beginner bluegrass lesson, sounds awesome. This lesson blends perfectly with a advanced beginner such as myself, thank-you friend
u rock
nice stuff!!! but why do you say rest instead of hold….rest would imply stopping the string!
Excellent lesson! The sound quality and effort put into the video production are great (and thanks for the follow-up crosspicking video too). I'll update you in 2 years when I get this mastered 😀
You could absolutely tell how the song goes all the way back to the 17th century. If you’re familiar with the music of the time, you will notice that it is modal. That gives it a very renaissance sound. John Dowland himself would not have found anything strange in the tune. He might’ve raised an eyebrow at the tempo. It might’ve been played a little slower back then. And I can almost guarantee that it would’ve been played on a 10 course Renaissance lute when it was first sung. That was old John‘s instrument. It’s amazing how it’s come down to us over the centuries like this.
Fantastic
Love all those beginner hammer ons and pull offs
I love this, I was at a point where I had reached the dreaded "plateau" and learning this has snapped me out of my funk. Thanks Brandon, you got yourself a new subscriber. Cheers mate.
very good you make it look so EASY…i keep trying to do it…
beginner for the style not for the guitar I guess 🙂
I wish I could learn from your teaching style.
Bro I hate to be a dick but is there any way you could notate the rhythm along with the tablature?
Listen to Billy Strings and Don Julin play this tune. Incredible picking.
Some songs just hit you in the gut and brain. Thank you very much for sharing.
You are fantastic instructor! Do you have a dvd…
This is a great insight into bluegrass playing taught with great patience.
Shady…
That is the tone I am looking for. What kind, size and shape of Guitar do I look for???
