The Smashing Pumpkins, “1979” guitar lesson. Next we’re using the studio grade Diamond Compressor to match the clean guitar in this riff. Starting with a tuning down half a step, the riff relies on octaves with a droning Eb to give it a jangling sound. To balance the tone, we chose the Diamond Compressor with has an optical circuit, known for preserving the natural attack while adding sustain and subtle compression. The compressor’s EQ also helps beef up single coils and smooth the top end. 1979 also uses chords where the high b and e strings ring out and the even mix from the Diamond Comp helps them stand out in the mix. Enjoy your daily guitar lesson.

Excellent, very helpful.
most of his lessons are perfect but this neglects 2 important things … the delay used on a 2nd guitar in the 1st riff – i would like to see a strategy to reproduce this on 1 guitar (i would use a delay with trails, engaged only on the Eb sliding down). also, in the chorus there's another part in the background thats harder to hear + figure out than the basic rhythm guitar. even if its not a guitar, it still needs to be played.
Loved it
Nothing sexier than a sonic blue Strat with a mint guard.
The chorus is actually just a regular E chord (022100) to Emaj7 (021100) and the rhythm of the verse is more simple than he plays it
and I think James plays a 7 string guitar (low A string), which you can hear in the bridge
Great lesson! Thanks.
That is totally not how you play Hot For Teacher by Van Halen. Thumbs down.
you gotta get the strumming pattern down
Awesome as usual! Thanks for the right chords ; )
such a nice clean tone on this vid…strats are the best
My guitar!!! Now to learn this creamy riff!
i can watch and listen to this dude play this song all day
Well, the original is also not done on a strat. It was some weird japanese guitar so it'd be tough to get the right sound with a more common instrument.
It's all relative, so it would matter as long it's a standard tuning. I would assume that the original was in Eb standard.
Agreed.
Guitar must be tuned to Eb for this song?
this song sounds a too little thin with this neck single coil, need to roll the tone knob a bit or 4th position to engage neck and middle pickup and tone knob around 5…
These demos show how much you can do with a Deluxe Reverb and a pedal.
Maybe he got married…
Studio grade often refers to the level of craftsmanship and/or signal to noise ratio.
I wonder if Andy is gaining weight.
Im 10 again!
So you use a pick sometimes!!
Hey Andy, could you help out and do a video for 'In The City' by The Jam. I'm trying to work out the finer details in the song. Thanks!
again perfect… you have the best musical choices.. each time
that finish
your lessons are utterly awesome! always good songs and this one is one I always wanted to learn 😀
Fantastic….as always. Love your tune choice btw!…
excellent format to the lesson – I think I could pick up my guitar and play it right away – got My Sharona laying around? lol
I like both. These are kind of 2 for 1 deals. Shows an actual application and teaches the newer players some songs.
awsome lesson
I was born in 1979 and 17 years old when this song came out. Hard to believe that another 17 years later, I still love it as much.
Id love to hear Andy attempt a high gain "Here Is No Why" tone
