Your video on the importance of transcribing really changed the way I listen to music and made me actually want to learn and not just play the guitar – there is so much nuance in music so many guitarists miss out on by not listening properly (doesn't have to be a guitar part), transcribing really helped me understand music as a listening experience. Also, for beginners I'd recommend starting with chords or riffs and not solos – because even if you figure out a 4-chord progression you can play along to a song, but with a solo you can only play a small part of the song.

  2. Stefan Hansen says:

Thank you for this. I have a question since I am puzzled by this piece of advice. You insisted on doing it one note at a time, pausing after each note. You say it is important but didn't explain why. What is your reason behind this advice?

  3. Erik Munkholm says:

Hey Justin, really awesome video as always! You got me really inspired to get into transcribing, but I have one question: What is the best software to transcribe with/on?

  4. Humanumikey says:

anybody know of any programs that can isolate solos from a song? by that I mean make it so you can adjust the song to where you hear mostly the solo instead of the band.

  5. Humanumikey says:

never thought about trying to learn solos this way. I was always a guy who gets tabs off the internet….but then again, those tabs/solos are transcribed by someone. I'll have give this a try for sure.

  6. JackDaniels10101 says:

I've been following Justin's courses for years now, though I've not been using them so much to learn (I've been playing on and off since the '80s, and it's just a pastime for me). I must say though that I'm really surprised knowing that he has almost half a million subscribers, and hundreds of millions of views… yet there's only been 37000 views of this important topic. Ear training is how all of your heroes learned to play, and this is probably the most important topic that Justin covers. It's a shame that more don't realise this.

Keep up the good work Justin… I'll get to one of your workshops in Sydney one day.

  7. Lennart says:

I just hit the point where I feel like I have to transcribe so I 100% identify myself with your comment on 10:38. I've reached the point where I can spot where and why I'm limited and how to solve it. It really opens doors! I started to do ear training and I'm going to follow your transcribing course for sure. I definitely notice a lot of progress and like you said it's really rewarding.

It's incredible how much useful stuff you share. The better I get the more I realise what a great job you do. You are a great source of information and such a humble guy. The guitar world thanks you.

Enough talk, time to practise again!

  8. Southampton Guitar Academy says:

I would also like to say that 'having an ear for music' isn't some kind of 'rock god ' given talent someone is either born with or not, but a skill that you develop over time. There are ways to improve this skill an many other music skills.
    1) find a good qualified guitar instructor in your area. Whilst the online resources are good, they will never replace a good music teacher.
    2) Ear training software such are Earmaster or Theta Music trainer will train your ears.
    3) play fun songs U enjoy:)

  9. Southampton Guitar Academy says:

Good question Badger4553. Don't feel discouraged by this. Learning music isn't as black and white as adding 1 & 1 together to make 2. Because of the way that a guitar is tuned there are several places where you can play the same note (for example the open E string note can also be produced on B string at 5th fret, G string at 9th fret, D string 14th fret etc. Because of this there are also a few different places where you could play the melody to a solo such as teen spirit or come as you are.

  10. Allan Cerf says:

i do bobby smith. i was a not good guitarist for years but had a great ear. couldn't understand what was up. weak wrists. I now have stronger than normal wrists. so my 'correction' was literally the WORST thing for most guitarists. weight lifting. funny old world. it worked, my ear (always did) work and boom. but yes, i do remember trying to ear out a Hendrix tune.

  11. Griffin Queen says:

You've gotta remember that there are the same notes all over the neck. You"re probably playing it correctly but not necessarily exactly where someone else plays it.

  12. Sudin says:

Transcribing is the most important and challenging job to workout on guitar. After watching this video i really going to push myself. Thanks Justin!!!!!!!!!

  13. John Toothill Jr. says:

One of the few smart thing my father taut me which you brought up was take a break. He told me" When you start to get upset or frustrated (Irish temper & all) walk away from it & do something different, then come back to it fresh. It may be a hour, day or even a week, come back to it when you fell comfortable. It seems to work for me.

  14. Francisco Calviño says:

You´ve got lots of benefits. First you start listening much better to stuff you didn´t hear before. Then you also recognise licks in other songs. You start uderstanding better your instrument, and before playing a note you are knowing how is going to sound. etc etc. And of course the satisfaction of doing it.

  15. MasterOfTheEggs2029 says:

i just did a whole song, simple song, yeah, but I just transcribed all of it's vocals onto guitar, aka the melody.

I've transcribed about 4 songs chords before, on 3 I was around 75% correct, but the 4th I was a lot closer to 100%.

On the melody I just transcribed, I'm 100% correct, and I don't transcribe very often, it was weeks since I last transcribed.

    Is this normal? 0_o
